Graduate Program Fees Structure - FAQs
This fact sheet addresses the course fee structure for graduate programs, except for executive programs such as the EMBA.
How are my program fees determined?
Program fees are set for each session and term by the York University Board of Governors, in accordance with the current Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities guidelines. The intention is to provide greater cost certainty to students who decide to attend graduate studies.
Every graduate student at York University is assigned a fees cohort year based on their year of entry to their program of study. If, for example, you are ‘new’ to York University for Summer 2010 or Fall/Winter 2010-2011, you are assigned the 2010 fees cohort.
Program fees at the graduate level are based on the following factors:
- The fees cohort year you have been assigned.
- The designation of your program as ‘professional’ or ‘regular’.
- Your fee category of Domestic or International student.
- Whether you are pursuing full-time or part-time studies as available in your program. (top)
How is the fees cohort year assigned?
In most cases, your fees cohort year is based on the year you entered your current program in graduate studies at York University. For example, students who have been admitted to a graduate program after May 1, 2010 are assigned a fees cohort year of 2010. (top)
Can my fees cohort year change?
If you change from an undergraduate to a graduate program, or from a master's program to a doctoral, your fees cohort will change to reflect the fees cohort year you entered the new program. (top)
What happens if I change my program?
If you change to a program which has higher program fees than the one in which you are currently registered, or you change from a ‘regular’ graduate program to a ‘professional’ graduate program, your fees cohort year will change (see below "What is the difference between professional and regular graduate fees?"). What is my fees cohort year if I transfer from another university?
If you transfer from another university, your fees cohort year will be based on the year you are admitted to York. (top)
What is the difference between professional and regular graduate fees?
The Tuition Fee Guidelines from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities provide for a different set of increases for graduate professional programs. The following programs are designated as professional graduate programs at York University:
- Master of Business Administration (MBA, iMBA)
- Master of Public Administration (MPA)
- Master of Design (MDes)
- Master of Human Resources Management (MHRM)
- Master of Public Policy, Administration and Law (MMPAL part-time)
- Master of Laws (LLM, part-time professional program)
- Master of Laws in Business for International Students
All other graduate programs are classified as regular programs (except for executive style programs and certain diploma programs). (top)
What is the domestic and international fee structure for graduate programs?
Domestic and international program fees for most graduate programs are assessed by term. Students are charged the per term rate, based on whether they are pursuing full-time or part-time studies, for the duration required to complete the program. Note that not all programs offer part-time study options.

York will publish program fees in advance of charges appearing on student account statements. (top)
How do I know if I am eligible for domestic or international fees?
The domestic or international fee status is determined by the information you provided on your application for admission regarding your status in Canada. You may be required to provide documentation to the Registrar’s Office to verify your eligibility for domestic fees. These regulations and deadline dates are provided by the Ontario government and are the same for both graduate and undergraduate students. Information about domestic and international fee rates is available for all students in the Academic Tuition Fee Categories section (under Student Financial Services) of the current Undergraduate Calendar. What are supplementary and additional fees?
Supplementary fees are composed of centrally collected ancillary fees and fees collected by the University that are approved by student referenda. They support items such as athletics and recreation, student associations, colleges, the Student Centre and other student run services. These fees at the graduate level are included in the overall program fee for most programs. A breakdown of the supplementary fees may be viewed on the course fee pages for your program. (top)
What are associated program fees?
Some courses have additional charges for consumables such as printed material and supplies. You can check if a course has associated program fees by viewing the information on the York Courses Web site for the course in which you are enrolling. (top)
